About the three images above: The first shows the coil pair of 45-cent Kapa Haka stamps (as offered in this lot); The second shows the front cover of leading Australian stamp magazine, " Stamp News ", which depicted the set of five stamps and speculated as to their value when first discovered in 2006; and The third shows the front cover of the 2007 edition of Len Jury's respected New Zealand stamp catalogue, which depicted a single (gummed) 45-cent value from the rare set of five. So, what is Kapa Haka? Kapa Haka is the term for traditional Mori performing arts, and literally means to form a line (kapa) and dance (haka). Kapa Haka is an avenue for M ori people to express and showcase their heritage and cultural Polynesian identity through song and dance. New Zealand's RARE 2006 Kapa Haka stamp issue - very briefly issued and then officially withdrawn due to complaints of cultural insensitivity.

NEW ZEALAND 2006 Kapa Haka Coil Pair of 45-cent self-adhesive stamps, briefly issued then recalled by New Zealand Post due to cultural insensitivity of the design, which were seen by many as insulting to Mori. Fine, fresh MNH as printed. After media attention and widespread complaints from the community, New Zealand Post chose, just three days before the planned first day of issue - NOT to release this controversial issue to all post offices nationally. Many in New Zealand thought the cartoon-like designs were not suitable for this issue, despite the involvement of Te Papa Tongarewa , the government's own Museum of New Zealand in the artwork and design approval process. HOWEVER, the New Zealand Post Office later confirmed in writing that it had mailed out a small quantity of the stamps to a small number of its Standing Order customers, who had ordered and paid for this issue already. This turned out to be a dramatic understatement! Whilst a maximum of 110 gummed mint stamps can exist, most in full sets of five, it is unlikely that anywhere near this number are in collections, or on the market. It is known, for example, that some were postally used, and may have been thrown away by unsuspecting recipients. The 2006 Kapa Haka has to be one of the rarest modern New Zealand stamp issues. One of them was depicted on the front cover of the respected Len Jury catalogue of New Zealand stamps. And the complete set was featured on the front cover of leading Australian magazine, Stamp News , shortly after their discovery (see images above). The issue is described in detail in the Stanley Gibbons stamp catalogue after SG #2285, and thus is keenly sought by serious collectors of New Zealand stamps the world over. There is a solid rump of collectors of errors on stamps globally for whom this issue is also highly prized. Among my stock of rare stamps, I have the complete set of five (5) gummed stamps, a self-adhesive coil pair, and even one complete stamp booklet of 10, the latter believed to be unique as the others were broken down into booklet pairs and blocks.
